In which the public will "train" a group by selecting each of the 101 trainees from different entertainment companies as well as style orientation for the group, choosing debut songs and including the group name. Produce 101 is Mnet's second largest investment program with the amount of 4 billion KRW (approximately 3.6 million USD, 81.3 billion VND).

Produce 101 is the first Korean company to collaborate with (except for two big companies, SM and YG, the show consists of 101 trainees from various domestic and foreign entertainment companies, and 11 girls will be selected and formed a group. The group will release and promote 4 songs within 1 year and release an album released by CJ E&M, but they can still debut with The group that their agency has already planned in. The members started living together on December 5, 2015. They went on stage and confronted each other for the first time at CJ E&M's studio in Ilsan on December 27, 2015.

Produce 101 was first announced in episode 453 of M Countdown on December 17, 2015. The group was introduced by Jang Keun-suk, and 98 out of 101 contestants showed off their talents through a stylish song. EDM - "Pick me".

Starting from December 18, 2015, the 101 contestants were respectively announced on the official website, Facebook, Instagram and Naver Tv Cast within seven days. Each girl is introduced through a photo and a video.

On January 21, 2016, a production lecture was held at 63 Convention Center in Yeouido, Seoul with MC Jang Keun-suk, 5 coaches, and 97 out of 101 trainees. During the event, it was announced that the project group from Produce 101 will be debuting under General YMC Entertainment

Regarding the girls' training, many famous artists were invited. Actor-singer Jang Keun-suk acts as a mentor, while singer JeA by Brown Eyed Girls, vocal coach Kim Sung-eun, solo singer Kahi and choreographer Bae Yoon- jung, and rapper Cheetah will take on the role of singing, dancing and rapping coaching. In addition, fitness trainer Ray Yang is in charge of fitness training for contestants.
