Before talking about the effects of the crowd, I would like to talk to you about the “ Boston tea party” that took place on December 16, 1773, at Griffin’s Wharf in Boston, Massachusetts.

In the 1760s, Britain was deep in debt, so British Parliament imposed a series of taxes on American colonists to help pay those debts. In May 1773, British Parliament passed the Tea Act which allowed British East India Company to sell tea to the colonies duty-free and much cheaper than other tea companies – but still highly tax the tea when it reached colonial ports.American colonists especially Boston people felt frustrated and angry at Britain for imposing “taxation without representation”. Therefore, a group of colonial merchants and tradesmen founded “ The Sons of Liberty” to other forms of taxation. On December 16, 1773, a large group of men boarded the docked ships and threw 342 chests of tea into the water. No one was hurt, and no property was damaged  except tea and a padlock. The participants reportedly swept the ships’ decks clean before they left.

You can see that the crowd effect can have good effects on the authority, individuals. If individuals are well- educated, rational and care for social problems. Then interested groups can affect on government policies to construct the society in the better way, and do not damage the social prosperity.

Crowd effect can also lead to the tyranny of the mass. In my presentation, I would like to focus on negative effects of tyranny of the majority on social network.

The social media user who is at liberty to mine data, move unrestricted from one social network site to another, push posts or comments to go viral, stalk another unimpeded and unfortunately bully others arbitrarily, has enormous powers which he could use in the most cruel, unreasonable and harsh manner is tyranny personified. These behaviors may have some adverse influences on people. For example, when a large group of people criticise, use harsh comment of  somebody status because he or she may do, or write something that against preference and interest of the mass. The one who was humiliated may feel sad, suffer from depression because of public pressure.
